One popular website offers 970 books to help you name your baby. Titles like Cool Names for Babies and 75,000+ Baby Names for the 21st Century reveal a truth most parents already know:
Names mean something. We spend months agonizing over just the right name for the new baby coming into the world. Should we name the baby after the father or the mother's father? If we name the baby this will they call her that? What if we get it wrong-will she be scarred for life?
In the Old Testament, names were not chosen because they were cute or cool. They represented the parents' hopes, dreams and prayers for their child. Take Daniel the prophet, for example, held captive in Babylon. His name meant "God is my judge." Names sometimes represented the circumstances of the child's birth: Isaac's name reflected his mother's laughter;Esau's, his hairy appearance.
God's name is so revered to the Jews that, starting in the later Old Testament days, they would not say it out loud. Even today in synagogues, they won't say the sacred name YHWH (Jehovah). Instead they call him Adonai-the Lord.
When God instructed Aaron to bless the Israelites with his sacred name, he bestowed a great honor on the newborn nation. He was promising to bless them. He was setting them apart for his own special purpose. As the priests pronounced this blessing on the Israelits, they were, in effect, calling upon God go live in their midst and meet their needs as their heavenly provider. To be called by God's holy name meant that they would be expected to act as holy people. They would have to live up to the name they'd been given.
When we were born again, we received a new name:Christian. We now carry the name of our Savior. Just as the Israelites were expected to bear God's name with dignity, we are to honor Christ's name by reflecting his character with our words and actions. That also means not using this name in vain or allowing others to defame it.
Jesus' name is the name above all names. Wear it proudly. Defend it loudly. Make it mean something holy and wonderful to everyone you meet. -Women's Devotional Bible.
Everybody says my name fits me good, Joy, which it does because I am always joyful with God's presence around me. How could I not be? Just as it said that their names represented their parents hopes, dreams and prayers for their child. It did so for mine as well. Over 20yrs ago my parents almost signed the papers for divorce. But today they've been happily married for 34yrs, I believe, & pastor a church at THE GATE to share Gods love which was shared with them. That is all joy right there. When they named me, they didn't know who their Father was & did not serve. But the Spirit in them knew what God was going to do in their lives & he planted that seed of joy in them. I am very thankful for my name because it represents what God had put in me by what he did for my family. Joy:by the prospect of possessing what one desires.
My desire is to be a symbol of my Father who which is covered with all joy.
-Joy
{Numbers 6:27}
Whenever Aaron and his sons bless the people of Israel in my name, I myself will bless them.”
{Revelation 2:17}
“Anyone
with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is
saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some
of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to
each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name
that no one understands except the one who receives it.
