"I can do anything I put my mind to."

"You can do anything you put your mind to" is good advice for building ones self-esteem, but it's not a fail-proof maxim.
Sometimes our talent, effort and determination are just enough to help us reach our goals. There are factors beyond our control, such as other people's choices. At some point we must accept that we are not the mistresses of our own fates.

The real problem comes when we seek to become self-sufficient-when we attribute our successes to ourselves and believe that in our own strength we can do anything. In contrast, God tells us that in Christ we can do all this, Philippians 4:13.
But what "this" is he referring to? "This" is not a guarantee of success in human terms; it's a promise that Christ will get us through whatever situation we're facing. "This" is a very difficult type of promise and could take any number of forms in our lives.

● Being deserted by my fiancee-I can't do this in my own strength, but Christ will somehow get me through.

● Burying my child-I can't do this in my own strength, but Christ will somehow get me through.

● Being laid off yet trusting that God will provide for me-I can't do this in my own strength, but Christ will somehow get me through.

● Learning to be content, even when I am in a bad marriage or unfulfilling job-I can't do this in my own strength, but Christ will somehow get me through.

If you have a dream goal in life, there's no harm in working toward it, as long as you believe it's honoring to God.
Often he is the one who gives you your heartfelt dreams and passions. You may find that along the way in life, your goals change. Be willing to adapt yours goals so that they're realistic and align with God's plan for your life. Keep this brief advice in mind:
● Acknowledge your insufficiency and his all-sufficiency. Depend on God-not yourself-to help you succeed.
Acts 17:23-
God determined your life's scenarios, From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

● Define success in God's terms.

● Find a mentor, someone who had followed a path similar to the one you want. Ask them how they got where they are today and what God taught them along the way.

{1 Corinthians 2:1-5}
1 When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan.
2 For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
3 I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling.
4 And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.
5 I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.

{Philippians 4:13}
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

{Revelation 3:17-18}
17 You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.
18 So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.
